- Father: Jeremiah GATCHELL Sr.
- Mother: Hannah SAITH
- Birth: 1684, Nottingham, Chester, Pennsylvania, United States
- LifeSketch: Could Elisha and Jeremiah be the children of Elizabeth Boude or of Hanna Saith? No death date available for Hanna 1672-1683; or marraige date for Elizabeth 1681-1685? Will written Dec 6, 1753 Philadelphia Co. Wills Proved Feb 26, 1754 - copy in my poss. Will names all children. Elisha was received into membership at the New Garden MM, Chester Co. PA on April 14, 1722 by his own request (proving he was not a born Quaker) per records of Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore, PA. The Nottingham MM was established in 1730, being set off from the New Garden MM per Swarthmore College records - Elisha helped build the Brick Meetinghouse, which later became located at Calvert, Cecil Co., MD, due to the running of the Mason/Dixon line. The unsettled line between PA and MD was the source of much difficulty. The officers of Cecil County MD, insisted on collecting taxes in Nottingham and Other border townships - even went so far as to make prisoners of Isaac Taylor and Elisha, who were magistrates of Chester Co., PA, for surveying lands in that vicinity. Their arrest coming to the knowledge of the governor of PA caused him to remonstrate with the authorities of Maryland, who referred the matter to the Attorney General, the men were tried and acquitted. From PA Archives (2nd Series) 19:713 (1893) Elisha Gatchell, a J.P. for Chester Co., was imprisoned in June 1722 in Cecil Co. MD, charged with "having invaded the lands of or belonging to MD in Right of this Province". Another rendition: "In June 1722, Isaac Taylor, surveyor for said county, while surveying some lands north of the line mentioned, was made a prisoner by an order from Cecil Court. Elisha Gatchell, going next day to court to see his friend, was also apprehended and committed to custody on the pretense that he had been assisting Isaac Taylor. Both Taylor and Gatchell were, without hearing, ordered to be bond over to the Provincial Court of Annapolis, and were to be tried by a judiciary of MD, for matterings transacted by them without the limits of MD, as officers of PA." This paper is listed in the Congressional Library as a rare publication, and can be seen only in a locked enclosure under surveillance. This paper was written and published by an Andrew Beadford, Philadelphia 1723. In 1726 "The strange caprices of that hot headed person" Elisha Gatchell are noted - per J. Smith Futhey and Gilbert Cope, History of Chester Co., PA (Philadelphia, 1881), pg 193. In 1736 Elisha Gatchell contributed 4 Pounds to the cost of Dock Street Bridge in Philadelphia per Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography 58:267 (1934). Proof of Elisha being the son of Jeremiah found in article by Dalliett "Grimstone Boude and Family" whereby Jeremiah gave POA to his property in Marblehead to son Jeremiah with Elisha quit-claiming his portion to brother.

- Father: Elisha GATCHELL Sr.
- Mother: Rachel WILCOX
- Birth: 1710, PA
- Birth: 1 APR 1711, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
- Appointed: His Majesty's Justice of Peace
- Military: Enrolled in the Militia of Maryland at Annapolis under Capt. John Oglivie
- LifeSketch: From the National Society of the DAR Vol 11 page 55: Elisha Gatchell was a patriotic Quaker who in 1776 was enrolled with the Cecil county militia. He was a farmer and a member of the Society of Friends of East Nottingham, Chester Co, PA. Elisha GATCHEL, Jr. was a farmer, a rope maker, a road-builder and a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers) of East Nottingham, Chester Co., PA. He was twice disowned "for muster" and serving as a soldier in 1777, and is described in Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) records as a "patriotic Quaker". From the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 11, Page 55: Elisha Gatchell Jr was a patriotic Quaker who in 1776 was enrolled with the Cecil County militia. Elisha Jr. was a farmer and a memeber of the Sociecty of Friends of East Nottingham, Chester Co., Pa. (now Calvert, Cecil Co. Md.) To quote from History of Lancaster County (by Ellis and Evans): "It may be interesting to know that the Gatchell Road, mentioned in many old writings, and still held in the memory of the older people, was laid out a century or more ago from McCall's Perry on the Susquehanna River (or some point in that direction) to Gatchel's Mills on Elk Creek, in Chester Co, for the purpose, as tradition has it, of conveying wheat from York County for the supply of those mills. Its location has been in many parts very materially altered, but it is still a leading road." It was Elisha Gatchell Jr. who, with his son, Joseph Gatchell, built this Gatchell Road. Elisha Jr. had a sawmill and Joseph had the Gristmill on Elk Creek, Chester Co., Pa. The Revolutionary War posed serious problems to those peace loving Friends (Quakers) who wished to fight no one. Many of them fulfilled their patriotic obligations by cleaning guns for the American soldiers, but even then, some were disowned form the Monthly Meeting. Elisha Gatchel Jr. was "disowned for muster" on March 5, 1777. In the Monthly Meeting minutes on that date, page 329: "Elisha Gatchell, Jr.,for want of truth of the principles of faith, has deviated to join a camp in training and mustering and has since gone out with them as soldier .....disowned for muster." Again on March 29, 1777: "Elisha Gatchell again went out on muster." It has been called to the writer's attentions that the descendants of Elisha Gatchell Jr. have joined the D.A.R. through his services as "a patriotic Quaker." Elisha Jr.'s grandson, Nathan Gatchell also was disowned by the Monthly Meeting: "cleans guns for the army and is disowned." The foloowoing is a copy of the "Oath of Fidelity and Allegiance to Maryland 1778" which was signed on March 2, 1778, by Elisha Gatchell Jr.; his two sons Samuel H. and Jeremiah Gatchell; Morris Jobe; Thomas Job Jr; Daniel Job Jr.; Samuel Bond; Hershel Job; all having signed before Richard Bond, as per his affirmation: "I, ________, do solemnly and truly decared that I do not hold myself bound to yield any allegiance or obedience to the King of Great Britian, his heirs or successors, and that I will be true and faithful to the State of Maryland, and will, to the utmost of my power, support, maintain, and defend the freedom and independence thereof, and the Government as now established, against all open enemies, and secret and traitorous conspiracies, attempts or combinations against thei State or the Government thereof, which may come to my knowledge." (Recorded in Liber 10, Folio 3-a, located in the Hall of Records, Annapolis, Md., whose Permission to reprint was granted to the writer on June 12, 1963)
